WHAT IS 3 AXIS MILLING?
3 AXIS MILLING IS STILL THE MOST USED TECHNIQUE TO CREATE ALL KINDS OF PARTS AND COMPONENTS. IT WORKS BY USING ROTARY TOOLS TO CARVE AND CUT AWAY UNWANTED RAW MATERIAL LEAVING BEHIND THE DESIRED SHAPE. THE ROTARY TOOL IS MOUNTED TO A VERTICAL COLUMN WITH THE TOOL BEING ABLE TO MOVE UP AND DOWN THIS COLUMN, ALSO KNOWN AS THE Z-AXIS. BELOW THE ROTARY TOOL IS THE WORK TABLE. THE WORK TABLE IS ABLE TO MOVE SIDE-TO-SIDE AND BACK-G-FORTH WITH THE SIDE-TO-SIDE MOTION REFERRED TO AS THE X-AXIS AND THE BACK-G-FORTH MOTION REFERRED TO AS THE Y-AXIS. ALL THREE AXES CAN MOVE SIMULTANEOUSLY ALLOWING FOR A MULTITUDE OF DIFFERENT CUTTING MOTIONS RESULTING IN MANY DIFFERENT PRODUCT SHAPES.
TRADITIONALLY THE MOTIONS OF THE MACHINE WERE CONTROLLED BY A PERSON TURNING THE AXES WITH HANDWHEELS. WITH THE ADVENT OF THE COMPUTER 3 AXIS CNC (COMPUTER NUMERICAL CONTROL] MILLING WAS BORN. THIS ALLOWED FOR THE MOTIONS OF THE AXES TO BE CONTROLLED BY COMPUTER CODING RESULTING IN MORE PRECISE CONTROL AND GREATLY OPENING UP THE CATALOG OF COMPONENTS THAT CAN BE PRODUCED. EARLY ON THE COMPUTER CODING WAS WRITTEN BY A PERSON USUALLY RIGHT AT THE MACHINE INTERFACE, BUT WITH TODAYS SOPHISTICATED SOFTWARE THIS CODING CAN NOW BE WRITTEN BY THE SOFTWARE ITSELF RESULTING IN EVEN MORE PRECISE CONTROL AND UNIQUE COMPONENTS.
CURRENTLY AT MOUNTAIN METAL WE CAN PROVIDE THIS SOFTWARE DRIVEN 3 AXIS CNC MILLING, WITH PLANS TO ADD MORE CAPABILITIES AS WE GROW OUR BUSINESS.
